THE LANDSCAPE
What’s the draw?
Those little twisting mangroves are Walakiri’s stars. Against the evening sky, they turn a beach walk into something you’ll probably take far too many photos of. Slow down, watch the light change and notice what the tide is doing. Step around exposed roots and give the mangroves their space.
ON THE ROAD
Getting there.
Walakiri is in Kawangu, Pandawai, east of Waingapu. Save the map pin below, then ask locally where to park and how to reach the beach. Arrive with daylight to spare and sort your overnight spot first. Sunset is much nicer when you’re not wondering where to sleep.
Save an offline route before leaving Waingapu. A line on a map won’t tell you whether a track suits the Jeep or whether you can use it. Ask before a new turn, and leave enough daylight for a change of plan.
BEFORE YOU SETTLE
Staying the night.
Great for sunset doesn’t automatically mean good to camp. Ask the landholder or community about the exact spot and agree any fee before setting up. Keep the Jeep out of the tidal area and stay clear of mangrove roots. No permission before evening? Head to your agreed backup.
Ask locally about swimming conditions and wildlife before entering coastal water. Keep clear of river mouths and mangrove areas if residents advise against access.
We haven’t confirmed current overnight fees, facilities or permission here. Say hello to the community or landholder, agree any charge before staying and take all your litter home. A small gift or donation can be a nice gesture where appropriate.
ISLAND TIME
When to visit.
Sunset is Walakiri’s signature moment, as Indonesia’s tourism authority points out. Check the tide before walking near the mangroves; it changes the view and where you can safely stand. Keep a dry route back. The trees look lovely without chasing a photo farther out.
Check the weather and route just before you go; old trip reports can only tell you so much. Give yourself enough time to reach your overnight spot safely. No photo is worth a rushed drive.
PACK THOUGHTFULLY
What to bring.
- A camera with a wrist strap for shoreline photography
- Footwear suitable for wet sand; keep off mangrove roots
- A torch for the return to your parked vehicle
- Water and a bag for every piece of litter
A few things for your own bag. For the kit we supply with the Jeep, see the adventure page.
