CAMPING-SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Assistance & route planning
Free assistance is available within approximately two hours’ driving time of our base in Waingapu. This is a driving-time limit, not a fixed geographical radius. Outside this zone, rescue or assistance required for any reason carries a minimum fee of IDR 1,500,000, including mechanical problems. The fee is a minimum; additional costs may depend on distance, access, recovery complexity and third-party services. Assistance depends on accessibility, staff availability and local conditions; immediate rescue is not guaranteed. Confirm your proposed route with RentSumba before departure.
East Sumba is strongly recommended. The Jeeps are approximately 30–40 years old. Although maintained, older vehicles can be mechanically unpredictable. Outside greater Waingapu, mechanics, parts and roadside help can be difficult to access.
Plan suitable roads, obtain local camping permission, respect cultural restrictions and settle camp before dark.
These terms include the assistance zone, outside-zone recovery charges and camping responsibilities. Read them before booking and confirm your route with RentSumba.
C1. Vintage vehicle characteristics
The camping Jeeps are authentic utility vehicles approximately 30–40 years old. They are maintained, but their performance and predictability cannot be expected to match a modern rental vehicle.
C2. Mechanical unpredictability
Mechanical issues may occur unexpectedly. Spare parts and qualified mechanics can be limited in remote areas. Renters should be comfortable with basic vehicle operation and make responsible driving decisions.
C3. Free assistance zone
Free assistance is available within approximately two hours of driving from the Waingapu base, subject to accessibility and operating conditions. This is a driving-time limitation, not a fixed geographical radius.
C4. Outside-zone rescue charges
Outside the free assistance zone, rescue or assistance for any reason carries a minimum IDR 1,500,000 fee, including mechanical problems, getting stuck and recovery requests. Additional costs may apply for distance, accessibility, recovery complexity and third-party services. Immediate help is not guaranteed; availability depends on accessibility, staff and local conditions. This camping-specific policy also governs sections 14 and 28 of the rental terms below.
C5. Camping permissions
A destination recommendation does not establish overnight permission. Renters must ask the landholder or relevant local community before camping on privately managed or community-controlled land and agree any fees.
C6. Sacred and restricted areas
Never camp on sacred beaches or in prohibited locations. Respect protected areas, private land and culturally sensitive places, and do not enter without the required permission.
C7. Equipment responsibility
Check the supplied equipment at handover, use it safely and appropriately, and return all supplied items with the vehicle. The confirmed equipment list forms part of the agreed handover.
C8. Lost or damaged camping equipment
Report lost or damaged items to RentSumba promptly. The existing rental terms concerning accessories and reasonable replacement costs apply to supplied camping equipment lost or damaged beyond normal wear. No new fixed equipment charge is stated here.
C9. Safe vehicle operation
Drive according to the vehicle, weather and actual road conditions. Stop safely and contact RentSumba if a serious mechanical symptom develops; do not continue if that could create danger or additional damage.
C10. Off-road restrictions
A utility Jeep does not authorize unrestricted off-road use. Follow the vehicle-use and route restrictions agreed with RentSumba. Do not enter unsuitable terrain, seawater, tidal areas or unauthorized water crossings.
C11. Night-driving recommendations
Plan each day in advance, allow additional time for difficult roads, and reach the camping destination before sunset. Avoid unnecessary driving after dark; assistance is considerably more difficult at night. No 24-hour response service is promised.
C12. Route planning and recommended region
East Sumba is strongly recommended. Long-distance travel to West Sumba is possible but is not recommended for these vintage Jeeps. Confirm the itinerary with RentSumba and understand assistance limits before booking. For extensive West Sumba journeys, consider a modern RentSumba rental vehicle instead. Inform someone about your intended route.
C13. Environmental protection
Keep camp clean, carry out litter, avoid disturbing wildlife and protect vegetation, mangrove roots and the coast. Follow any local restrictions on fires and activities.
C14. Respect for local communities
Respect local customs, community land, fees and access restrictions. Small donations or gifts are appreciated where appropriate; they do not replace permission or an agreed charge. Accept restrictions and choose another location when necessary.
C15. Emergency procedures and self-reliance
Move to safety and contact RentSumba with your location and a description of the problem. A toolbox, towing rope, jump-start cables, first-aid kit and basic emergency/survival equipment are supplied. Be prepared for minor issues, particularly outside the zone, but do not attempt a repair or recovery beyond your ability. The equipment cannot resolve every mechanical issue.
RentSumba Jeep Camping Rental Terms & Conditions
UPDATED 9 OCTOBER 2026
These terms adapt RentSumba’s September 2026 rental conditions for the Jeep Camping Adventure. Booking-specific conditions confirmed in writing form part of the rental agreement.
1. Rental Period & Daily Rates
Rental prices are charged per vehicle per day.
Each started rental day is charged as one full rental day. Partial-day returns do not automatically qualify for a partial refund.
The agreed rental period begins at the date and time stated in the booking or vehicle handover and ends when the vehicle has been returned to RentSumba or an agreed representative at the agreed location.
Any extension must be approved by RentSumba in advance and is subject to vehicle availability.
Keeping a vehicle beyond the agreed rental period without approval may result in additional rental, collection, recovery, or other reasonable costs.
2. Booking & Payment
A booking is considered confirmed once RentSumba has confirmed the reservation and any required payment or deposit has been received.
Rental prices, delivery charges, driver services, or other additional services will be communicated before confirmation.
Unless specifically included in the booking, the rental price does not include fuel, fines, parking fees, entrance fees, ferry charges, recovery costs, damage, or other expenses incurred by the renter.
3. Security Deposit
A refundable security deposit is required:
- Motorbikes: IDR 500,000 per vehicle
- Cars & Jeeps: IDR 1,500,000 per vehicle
The security deposit may be used toward amounts owed by the renter, including:
- vehicle damage;
- missing or damaged accessories;
- lost keys;
- abnormal cleaning;
- missing fuel;
- traffic or parking fines attributable to the rental period;
- towing or recovery charges;
- unauthorized extension of the rental;
- other costs for which the renter is responsible under these terms.
The deposit does not represent a maximum liability amount. If damage, loss, recovery costs, or other liabilities exceed the security deposit, the renter remains responsible for the remaining amount.
Any remaining refundable deposit will be returned after the vehicle has been inspected and outstanding rental-related costs have been determined.
4. Driver Requirements
The vehicle may only be driven by a person accepted as a driver for the rental.
The renter is responsible for ensuring that every driver has a valid driving licence and any additional licence or permit legally required to operate the relevant vehicle in Indonesia.
The renter must not allow an unauthorized, unlicensed, intoxicated, or otherwise legally prohibited person to operate the vehicle.
The renter remains responsible for the vehicle when another authorized driver operates it.
5. Vehicle Condition & Handover
The renter should inspect the vehicle at handover.
Existing visible damage may be documented using photographs, video, or a vehicle condition record.
The renter is encouraged to take their own photographs or video at the beginning and end of the rental.
By accepting the vehicle, the renter acknowledges that it has been received in the condition documented at handover, except for defects immediately reported to RentSumba.
The vehicle must be returned in substantially the same condition, allowing for normal wear from proper use.
6. Fuel Policy
RentSumba operates a full-to-full fuel policy unless otherwise agreed.
The vehicle is provided with a full tank and should be returned with a full tank.
If a vehicle is returned without the agreed fuel level, RentSumba may charge the renter for the missing fuel and reasonable costs associated with refuelling.
The renter is responsible for using the correct type of fuel.
Damage or recovery required because of incorrect fuel is the renter’s responsibility.
7. Vehicle Use
The renter must use the vehicle responsibly and according to its intended purpose.
Vehicles must not be used:
- for racing, speed testing, competitions, or similar activities;
- while the driver is under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or other substances that impair driving;
- to intentionally or recklessly enter unsafe terrain;
- to carry passengers or cargo beyond the vehicle’s safe or legal capacity;
- for unlawful activities;
- to tow another vehicle unless specifically approved;
- by an unauthorized driver;
- in a manner likely to cause avoidable damage.
The renter must take reasonable precautions to protect the vehicle from damage, theft, flooding, salt water, fire, vandalism, and other avoidable risks.
8. Road & Route Restrictions
Road conditions across Sumba vary considerably. Some roads may become difficult or impassable because of weather, construction, flooding, erosion, or local conditions.
The renter is responsible for choosing routes appropriate for the rented vehicle.
Suzuki Ignis
The Suzuki Ignis is a paved-road vehicle and is not intended for off-road use.
Guests planning longer journeys with the Ignis should send their proposed route to RentSumba before departure so that RentSumba can advise whether the known road conditions appear suitable for the vehicle.
Route advice does not guarantee road conditions or eliminate the renter’s responsibility to make safe decisions while driving.
If a renter continues onto a road or terrain that is clearly unsuitable for the vehicle, resulting recovery or damage costs may be charged to the renter.
9. Beaches, Salt Water & Water Crossings
Unless RentSumba specifically authorizes otherwise, vehicles must not be driven into seawater, tidal areas, deep water, flooded roads, rivers, or other water crossings that may reasonably damage the vehicle.
Salt-water damage can cause significant mechanical and electrical damage and is considered improper vehicle use.
The renter is responsible for damage resulting from unauthorized water exposure or unsuitable water crossings.
10. Accidents
If the vehicle is involved in an accident, the renter must:
- stop safely and take reasonable steps to prevent further damage;
- contact RentSumba as soon as reasonably possible;
- photograph or record the vehicle, accident location and relevant damage;
- obtain the details of other involved parties where applicable;
- cooperate with RentSumba regarding any police report or other documentation that may reasonably be required;
- not admit liability or agree to a private settlement on behalf of RentSumba without authorization.
The renter must follow reasonable instructions from RentSumba regarding recovery or handling of the vehicle.
11. Damage & Renter Responsibility
Comprehensive rental vehicle insurance is not available on Sumba.
For self-drive rentals, the renter assumes responsibility for the rented vehicle during the rental period.
The renter may therefore be responsible for the reasonable cost of repairing damage occurring during the rental, subject to the circumstances and applicable law.
This may include damage to:
- bodywork;
- bumpers;
- lights;
- mirrors;
- glass;
- wheels and tyres;
- suspension;
- underbody;
- interior;
- engine or drivetrain;
- electrical components;
- accessories and equipment.
Normal wear resulting from ordinary and appropriate use is not treated as renter-caused damage.
The renter must report significant damage promptly rather than continuing to operate a vehicle where doing so could reasonably cause additional damage.
12. Tyres, Wheels & Underbody Damage
The renter should drive according to road conditions.
Damage caused by potholes, rocks, unsuitable roads, off-road use, or continued driving on a damaged or deflated tyre may be charged to the renter where the damage results from misuse, negligence, or an unsuitable route.
Normal tyre wear is RentSumba’s responsibility.
13. Mechanical Problems
If a warning light appears, unusual noise develops, the vehicle overheats, steering or braking changes significantly, or another potentially serious mechanical issue occurs, the renter should stop somewhere safe and contact RentSumba.
The renter should not continue driving when doing so could reasonably cause additional damage or create a safety risk.
Mechanical failure resulting from normal wear or an existing vehicle defect is not the renter’s responsibility.
Damage caused by continuing to drive after an obvious serious warning or malfunction may be charged to the renter.
14. Roadside Assistance & Recovery
Free assistance for the Jeep Camping Adventure is available within approximately two hours of driving from RentSumba’s base in Waingapu, subject to accessibility and operating conditions. This is a driving-time limit, not a fixed geographical radius.
Outside this zone, rescue or assistance required for any reason carries a minimum fee of IDR 1,500,000. This includes mechanical problems, vehicles getting stuck, recovery requests and other situations requiring the team to travel outside the zone.
The fee is a minimum, not necessarily the final cost. Additional costs may apply depending on distance, accessibility, recovery complexity and third-party services.
Immediate rescue or assistance is not guaranteed. Outside-zone assistance depends on accessibility, staff availability and local conditions. Renters must understand these limits before booking and confirm their planned route with RentSumba.
15. Loss, Theft & Vehicle Security
The renter must take reasonable precautions to secure the vehicle.
When leaving the vehicle unattended, the renter should:
- switch off the engine;
- remove the key;
- lock the vehicle where applicable;
- avoid leaving valuable items visible;
- park in a reasonably safe location.
Loss or theft must be reported to RentSumba immediately and, where appropriate, to the police.
The renter may be responsible for loss resulting from negligence, misuse, failure to secure the vehicle, or loss of keys.
16. Keys, Helmets & Accessories
Keys, helmets, phone holders and any other equipment supplied with the vehicle remain the property of RentSumba.
The renter is responsible for returning all supplied items.
Reasonable replacement costs may be charged for items that are lost or damaged beyond normal wear.
Lost vehicle keys may also result in costs associated with replacement, programming, locksmith services, or vehicle recovery.
17. Cleaning
Normal cleaning following ordinary rental use is included.
Additional cleaning charges may apply where a vehicle is returned in a condition requiring exceptional cleaning, including excessive mud, sand, food, stains, smoke contamination, bodily fluids, or other unusual contamination.
18. Traffic Violations, Fines & Authorities
The renter is responsible for traffic violations, parking violations, fines, penalties, and similar charges resulting from their use of the vehicle during the rental period.
Where RentSumba receives such a charge after the rental, the renter remains responsible for the applicable amount and reasonable administrative costs associated with resolving it.
RentSumba may provide legally required renter or driver information to competent authorities when required by law.
19. Personal Property
RentSumba is not responsible for personal belongings left in or on a rented vehicle, except where liability cannot legally be excluded.
Renters should check the vehicle carefully before returning it.
RentSumba will make reasonable efforts to assist with recovering items found after a rental.
20. Delivery & Collection
Waingapu
Vehicle delivery within the designated Waingapu area is free.
Tambolaka
Delivery or collection in Tambolaka costs:
IDR 1,500,000 / way / vehicle
unless a different amount has been specifically agreed as part of the booking.
Other locations
Islandwide delivery or collection may be available by prior arrangement.
Prices depend on location, distance, vehicle type, logistics, and availability.
The renter should provide accurate accommodation and contact information and be available at the agreed handover time.
21. Late Return
Vehicles should be returned at the agreed time and location.
If the renter expects to be late, RentSumba should be contacted as soon as possible.
A late return may result in an additional full rental day being charged, particularly where the delay enters another rental period or affects a subsequent reservation.
Additional collection or logistical costs caused by an unauthorized late return may also be charged where reasonable.
22. Early Return
Returning a vehicle earlier than the confirmed rental period does not automatically entitle the renter to a refund for unused rental days.
RentSumba may consider exceptional circumstances individually.
23. Cancellation Policy
Unless a different cancellation condition was explicitly agreed for a particular booking:
14 days or more before the scheduled rental
Free cancellation.
7–13 days before the scheduled rental
50% cancellation charge.
Less than 7 days before the scheduled rental or no-show
100% cancellation charge.
Where reasonably possible, RentSumba may offer rescheduling instead of cancellation.
Any rescheduling is subject to vehicle availability and agreement with RentSumba.
24. Flights, Ferries & Travel Disruption
The renter is responsible for planning sufficient time around flights, ferries and other transportation.
Delayed or cancelled flights, ferries, accommodation changes, weather, illness, or changes to the renter’s travel plans do not automatically override the cancellation policy.
Where possible, RentSumba will try to accommodate reasonable schedule changes, subject to vehicle and staff availability.
Travel insurance covering trip cancellation and disruption is recommended.
25. Weather & Road Conditions
Sumba’s weather and road conditions can change quickly.
Rain, flooding, landslides, damaged roads, construction, or other conditions may affect travel.
RentSumba cannot guarantee that a particular road, destination, attraction, beach, or route will remain accessible during the rental.
The renter remains responsible for making safe driving decisions based on actual conditions.
26. Driver Service
Where a vehicle is rented with a driver, the exact service, hours, route, accommodation requirements, meals, fuel arrangements, and any additional charges will be confirmed as part of the booking.
Guests should discuss longer or multi-day routes with RentSumba before confirmation.
27. Vehicle Availability & Substitution
RentSumba will make reasonable efforts to provide the vehicle reserved.
Vehicle rental is nevertheless subject to operational availability.
If a reserved vehicle becomes unavailable because of mechanical problems, accident damage, a delayed previous renter, or another circumstance outside RentSumba’s reasonable control, RentSumba may offer a suitable alternative vehicle where available.
If no reasonable alternative can be provided, RentSumba will address any affected prepaid rental amount according to the circumstances and applicable law.
28. Breakdown Not Caused by the Renter
If the vehicle becomes unusable because of mechanical failure not caused by accident, misuse, negligence, unsuitable terrain or another renter action, RentSumba will make reasonable efforts to repair the vehicle, provide a replacement where reasonably available, or make an appropriate adjustment for the affected rental period.
Replacement vehicles and immediate assistance cannot be guaranteed, particularly in remote areas or during high demand. Any rescue or assistance is subject to the camping-specific assistance zone and outside-zone charges in section 14. Those outside-zone charges apply even when the issue is a mechanical problem not caused by the renter.
29. Prohibited Transfer or Sub-Rental
The renter may not sell, rent, sub-rent, lend, pledge, transfer, or otherwise give possession of the vehicle to another person except an authorized driver.
The vehicle must not be used for commercial passenger transport or other commercial activities unless specifically agreed with RentSumba.
30. Responsibility for Passengers
The renter and driver are responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is used within its permitted passenger and load capacity.
Motorbike riders and passengers must use helmets where required and should follow applicable road-safety requirements.
31. Rental Termination
RentSumba may terminate a rental and request immediate return of the vehicle if the vehicle is being used illegally, dangerously, outside agreed restrictions, by an unauthorized driver, or in a manner creating a substantial risk of damage.
Where necessary to protect the vehicle or public safety, RentSumba may arrange recovery of the vehicle.
Reasonable recovery costs resulting from a serious breach of these terms may be charged to the renter.
32. Limitation Regarding Travel Plans
Information provided by RentSumba about roads, destinations, travel times, attractions, weather, or routes is provided as practical local guidance.
Conditions can change and such information should not be interpreted as a guarantee of safety, accessibility, travel time, or suitability.
The driver remains responsible for deciding whether it is safe and lawful to continue a journey.
33. Force Majeure
RentSumba is not responsible for failure or delay caused by circumstances reasonably outside its control, including severe weather, natural disasters, flooding, road closures, government restrictions, civil disturbances, ferry or flight disruption, or similar events.
Where such circumstances materially affect a booking, RentSumba and the renter should seek a reasonable practical solution, such as rescheduling where possible.
34. Acceptance of These Terms
By confirming a booking, making payment, signing or accepting a rental agreement, or taking possession of a RentSumba vehicle, the renter confirms that they have read and accepted these Rental Terms & Conditions.
Any booking-specific conditions confirmed in writing by RentSumba form part of the rental agreement.
