THE ADVENTURE ESSENTIALS
Good questions.
Better adventures.
What’s packed? Where can you sleep? What if the Jeep has a moment? Here are the useful bits. Send us a message if you’re still wondering.

The adventure
How does the Jeep camping adventure work?
Send us your dates, agree a suitable route and collect your Jeep and camping kit. Then you’re off to explore at your own pace. Ask locally before camping, settle in before dark and bring the Jeep back as agreed. Simple plans, good stories.
Do I need camping experience?
You don’t need to be a seasoned camper, but you should feel comfortable travelling independently outdoors and handling the basics. Tell us your experience before booking, and ask us to walk you through the kit at handover.
Can I choose my own route?
Yes—let’s check it suits the Jeep and agree it before you go. Roads and camping spots still need the right permissions, so ask before a new track or overnight stop.
Can I rent the Jeep for multiple days?
Absolutely, subject to availability and the rental agreement. Send us your dates and we’ll check what works. Ask us about the rental period when you book.
Is this a guided experience?
You’ll be exploring independently with your Jeep and camping kit. If you’d like extra services, ask us first; they need to be agreed separately.

Vehicle & equipment
What camping equipment is included?
The cosy bits: pillows, blankets, chairs and towels. The useful bits: lights, torches, two gas canisters intended for the trip, a lighter, a drinking-water container, USB charging, a 12V-to-USB adapter and a 220V inverter. There’s also a first-aid kit, toolbox, towing rope, jump-start cables and basic emergency/survival equipment.
Are pillows and blankets provided?
Yes, both are packed. Bed hair is your contribution.
Can I charge my phone?
Yes. You’ve got vehicle USB charging, a 12V-to-USB adapter and a 220V inverter. Bring your own cables and ask us about safe use at handover.
Is drinking water included?
A drinking-water gallon/container is included. Check the amount of water and refill arrangements with us before leaving.
Is cooking gas included?
Two gas canisters intended for the trip and a lighter are included. A stove and cooking utensils aren’t confirmed, so let’s check your cooking setup before you book.
What happens if I need additional gas?
You can buy extra canisters from local shops. Check the compatible type with us first.
Are the Jeeps suitable for off-road driving?
They’re vintage utility Jeeps, so let’s check your route together. Stick to suitable, agreed roads and tracks. Avoid salt water, unsuitable terrain and any water crossing we haven’t authorised.

Camping locations
Where can I camp in Sumba?
East Sumba is our strong recommendation. Our guides give you places to explore; overnight spots still need permission. Ask the landholder or community about the exact place you’d like to camp before setting up.
Is camping free?
Sometimes there may be a fee, so ask before staying and agree the amount. Small gifts or donations can be welcome where appropriate, but they don’t replace permission or an agreed fee.
Do I need permission from local communities?
Yes. Start with a hello, ask the community or landholder and follow their guidance on where you can go and set up.
Are there forbidden camping areas?
Yes—respect private land, restricted areas, sacred places and local rules. Unsure? Ask before entering or camping.
Can I camp on sacred beaches?
Only if overnight camping is explicitly welcomed under local cultural guidance. If it isn’t, respect that and choose another spot.
Is East Sumba recommended?
Yes, strongly. Beaches, rolling savannah and plenty to explore, with more practical access to our Waingapu base. We’ll still check each route with you.
Can I take the Jeep to West Sumba?
It’s possible, but we don’t recommend it for these vintage Jeeps. For a longer West Sumba trip, consider a modern RentSumba rental instead. East Sumba is our strong recommendation; let’s agree your route before booking. Beyond the approximately two-hour driving-time assistance zone, help for any reason—including mechanical problems—costs at least IDR 1,500,000.

Safety & assistance
What is the free assistance zone?
It covers approximately two hours’ driving time from our Waingapu base, not a fixed radius on a map. Beyond that, help for any reason—including mechanical problems—costs at least IDR 1,500,000. Distance, access, recovery complexity and third-party services can add costs. Response depends on access, available staff and local conditions; immediate rescue isn’t guaranteed. Let’s check your route before you go.
What happens if the Jeep breaks down?
Stop somewhere safe and contact us. Don’t keep driving if it could cause damage or put you at risk. Our Jeeps are maintained, but they’re around 30–40 years old; immediate help or a replacement isn’t guaranteed. Outside-zone assistance costs at least IDR 1,500,000, including for mechanical problems.
What happens if I get stuck?
Stop if trying again could make things worse, get to safety and contact us. Share your location and what happened. The recovery kit is useful, but a difficult recovery still needs someone who can handle it safely.
What is the rescue fee?
Outside the free assistance zone, help for any reason—including mechanical problems—starts at IDR 1,500,000. Extra costs can depend on distance, access, recovery complexity and third-party services. Available staff, access and local conditions affect the response; immediate rescue isn’t guaranteed.
What emergency equipment is included?
A first-aid kit, toolbox, towing rope, jump-start cables and basic emergency/survival equipment. Check the contents and ask how to use them at handover.
Can I request assistance at night?
Contact us if something goes wrong. We haven’t confirmed night response hours and don’t promise a 24-hour service. Plan your driving and camp setup for daylight wherever possible.
Why should I set up camp before dark?
It’s much easier to ask permission, check the ground and tide, park safely and find your bearings while you can see. Plan ahead, allow extra time for tricky roads and let someone know your route. Avoid unnecessary night driving; roadside assistance is much harder after dark.
