THE LANDSCAPE

What’s the draw?

Tanau—also written as Tenau—is a hill stop in Mauliru / Kambera. Layers of gentle ridgelines catch the sunrise and sunset light, which is why Indonesia’s tourism authority highlights both. Give yourself time to watch the shadows move. One photo, then a few minutes just looking, is a pretty good plan.

ON THE ROAD

Getting there.

Head from Waingapu towards Kambera and save the tourism authority’s pin below. Ask locally about the final approach and where to park. Driving time and current road conditions need checking, so talk the route through with us before taking your vintage Jeep.

Save an offline route before leaving Waingapu. A line on a map won’t tell you whether a track suits the Jeep or whether you can use it. Ask before a new turn, and leave enough daylight for a change of plan.

BEFORE YOU SETTLE

Staying the night.

You may see travel stories about staying overnight here, but we haven’t confirmed current permission or a formal campsite. Ask the community about a safe spot and any fee or contribution. Keep paths clear and the Jeep on suitable ground, rather than driving onto the ridges.

Ask locally about swimming conditions and wildlife before entering coastal water. Keep clear of river mouths and mangrove areas if residents advise against access.

We haven’t confirmed current overnight fees, facilities or permission here. Say hello to the community or landholder, agree any charge before staying and take all your litter home. A small gift or donation can be a nice gesture where appropriate.

ISLAND TIME

When to visit.

Sunrise and sunset both get a mention in destination guides. For an early visit, check the approach beforehand and plan around unfamiliar roads in darkness. For sunset, have your overnight spot sorted so you can reach camp before dark.

Check the weather and route just before you go; old trip reports can only tell you so much. Give yourself enough time to reach your overnight spot safely. No photo is worth a rushed drive.

PACK THOUGHTFULLY

What to bring.

  • A wind layer for an early or late hill visit
  • A torch for a short walk to your parked vehicle
  • Water, comfortable shoes and sun protection
  • A camera and an agreed daylight driving plan

A few things for your own bag. For the kit we supply with the Jeep, see the adventure page.
