LONGER ROUTE / PLAN YOUR RANGE
Free assistance is available within approximately two hours’ driving time of our base in Waingapu. This is a driving-time limit, not a fixed geographical radius. Outside this zone, rescue or assistance required for any reason carries a minimum fee of IDR 1,500,000, including mechanical problems. The fee is a minimum; additional costs may depend on distance, access, recovery complexity and third-party services. Assistance depends on accessibility, staff availability and local conditions; immediate rescue is not guaranteed. Confirm your proposed route with RentSumba before departure.
THE LANDSCAPE
What’s the draw?
Tarimbang is a broad sandy bay on the south coast in Tabundung, framed by hills and headlands. It’s known for surf and takes more planning from Waingapu. Come for the big coastal view and an unhurried stop. Enjoy the ocean from shore unless local conditions and your experience make entering the water safe.
ON THE ROAD
Getting there.
Give Tarimbang room in your plan—it’s a longer journey from Waingapu. Driving reports vary, so we haven’t set a fixed time or promised current road conditions. Share your full route with us, check fuel and supplies along the way and leave plenty of daylight for the final stretch.
Save an offline route before leaving Waingapu. A line on a map won’t tell you whether a track suits the Jeep or whether you can use it. Ask before a new turn, and leave enough daylight for a change of plan.
BEFORE YOU SETTLE
Staying the night.
Ask the community or landholder where you can stay and get permission before setting up. Tarimbang isn’t automatically in the free assistance zone. Check the coverage and minimum IDR 1,500,000 outside-zone assistance fee before the drive, and agree what to do if the Jeep has a mechanical problem.
Ask locally about swimming conditions and wildlife before entering coastal water. Keep clear of river mouths and mangrove areas if residents advise against access.
We haven’t confirmed current overnight fees, facilities or permission here. Say hello to the community or landholder, agree any charge before staying and take all your litter home. A small gift or donation can be a nice gesture where appropriate.
ISLAND TIME
When to visit.
Plan your driving and arrival around daylight, with an overnight spot already arranged. Sea conditions change, and good surf doesn’t automatically mean safe swimming. Ask for current local advice before entering the bay.
Check the weather and route just before you go; old trip reports can only tell you so much. Give yourself enough time to reach your overnight spot safely. No photo is worth a rushed drive.
PACK THOUGHTFULLY
What to bring.
- Enough drinking water and provisions for the longer journey
- Offline navigation and an agreed route with RentSumba
- A charged phone, torch and daylight arrival plan
- Any personal ocean equipment you need; surf equipment is not included
A few things for your own bag. For the kit we supply with the Jeep, see the adventure page.
